Case Study: Miss M
October 1, 2026 2:35 pmMiss M is a lone parent with two dependent children, and she receives Universal Credit, Carers Allowance and Child Benefit.
Miss M has dyslexia and suspected ADHD, which affects her memory and ability to manage written correspondence. She has three disabled children, one of whom does not live with her. She experiences significant difficulty reading letters, particularly where there is text on a white background, and struggles to complete forms. As a result, important correspondence is sometimes put aside and overlooked. On this occasion, this has contributed to a large bill accruing, which she is unable to afford to repay. She also advised that she does not claim Disability Living Allowance for her children because of the difficulties she faces in reading and completing the relevant forms. We have since signposted Miss M to her local advice agency where they can help her apply for DLA.
Miss M is also without a working washing machine in her home. Her children suffer from incontinence, so travels to the laundrette every other day which impacts further on her finances.
Outcomes: Water grant approved for £1,650 and we also purchased a washing machine
